| I just downloaded the free trial version of Studio One. As of now, no external plugins. All I try to do is play midi files. Thought the midi files are loading properly, when I play them, all I get is silence. While loading a midi file, there is a dialog box 'Do you want to load General MIDI sounds for this file?'. Doesn't matter what answer I give. In setup on start page I have selected ASIO4ALL v2. Also when the program is started, I get the error message 'Failed to open Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth!' I have a feeling my problem has something to do with this. Any idea on how to get the program to play midi files properly? Thanks. Shankar |
5) A MIDI file will not change the tempo data of a song. The tempo data is part of the song and not the MIDI file. However MIDI files do contain tempo data if used as the core of a new song. If this is the case then you’ll need to create the MIDI file and use the ALT key to stretch the tempo. Studio One uses a threshold for MIDI files, perhaps around 50KB in size, where if a MIDI file is over that threshold it will not import in to an existing song, but instead will create a new song. Listen to METALLICA.One.mid, a free MIDI file on BitMidi. Play, download, or share the MIDI song METALLICA.One.mid from your web browser.
If you would like Studio One to ignore Aftertouch, Pitch Bend, Program Change, or all CC messages, enable filtering for any or all of these messages. In the Receive From drop-down menu, select the MIDI interface input from which Studio One Artist will receive MIDI data (that is, the MIDI input port to which your keyboard is connected).
| Have you set up your audio device within S1? Does your device have a driver and if so, is it the latest? After doing that or if so, you need to map your audio device to the tracks you're using within S1. To do that, click on 'Input' on a track and it should bring up an 'Audio Setup Panel' provided you've got your device setup correctly. | Try and drag an instance of presence over to the midi track and see if that works. | Scott- I have a Samsung laptop with i5 3210M @ 2.5 GHz, 6 GB RAM, 1 TB hard drive, running Windows 8. Audio device is Realtek High Definition Audio default device. The audio works fine with other applications, including Windows Media Player, FL Studio, Anvil Studio, etc. I believe the drivers are current. One thing I observe is, when I have S1 open, it locks up the sound card, preventing other applications from playing any audio (not just midi). Have attached the message log file created by S1 while loading. (Changed xml extension to txt since this board doesn't allow xml attachments.) Matthew- How do I drag an instance of presence over to the midi track? I am new to this. Also no point in downloading the professional version till I get the free version working.

| Ok, got it. Presence is the Presonus library. Yes, dragged it to a few tracks, but again, dead silence. Even when I played the keyboard in the presence window, I hear no output. |

| Is there a preset selected or did you just drag the default over? Do you have a default input device selected? Keyboard? Qwerty Keyboard? Without know what and how things were set up, it makes it harder to troubleshoot. | It is just the default. Right now, there is no default input device selected. I am just using the mouse, but I don't think this really matters as far as my problem is concerned, does it? |
| If you dragged the default Presence instrument onto the track it probably didn't install a soundest ('instrument') to play so looks like this image and has nothing to play. If so then select an instrument from the drop down Say a keyboard to whatever suits you. And when you have it should now look similar to this and then should play sounds. | Thanks Steve. Yes, even I was searching for the instrument selection in the Presence panel. Unfortunately, when I click on the dropdown arrow at the top where it says 'default', I get only one value which is '(no presets)'. I am not able to view any instruments. Seems like some library is not getting loaded. Shankar |
| When you get Studio Free did you also register/logon to MyPresonus and get the extra installers that are part of it.. These would be the free Soundset sample pack and free MusicLoop sample pack? This might be what you are missing!! BTW My list above in the previous message is my Studio One Pro listing so you would not see as many but you should see some. | Yes, that worked. Thanks! But still wonder why the Microsoft GS Wavetable synth does not work with S1. Although I don't plan on using it for my compositions, it would be helpful if I can play existing midi files without having to manually reassign every track to a Presence soundset instrument. |
| Another major issue I have with S1 is, as I have mentioned before, it locks up the sound chip, and I am not able to get any audio output from other applications while S1 is open. I checked the Windows audio mixer and the volume settings of the other applications are still normal. Could this problem be because of ASIO4All being installed on my system? Don't know if others also have run into this. |

There are several people who have asked how you can export a MIDI file from Studio One as Standard MIDI File - Type 0 (SMF-0). There are a few reasons that one might need to do this.
- You play live with an external sequencer controlling your synths and it's not logistically feasible to use your computer (Figure 1).
- You play with just a workstation and want the internal sequencer to play your songs with all your onboard sounds in the correct places (again without use of your computer).
- You create Standard MIDI Files for other people to use (Commercial or Public).
- You want to be able to use the MIDI file in another DAW and use the General MIDI (GM) sounds in that DAW (Reason, Cubase, etc.)
There may be other reasons I'm not aware of, but these are the biggest ones.
The short answer to this question of how to export SMF-0's is...you can't. Since Studio One does not use MIDI as it is currently known, it doesn't store Program Changes within the MIDI file itself. It stores that information within the actual Song file (Figure 2).
How To Export MIDI From Studio One To Standard MIDI Files

Still The One Midi File
When you export a MIDI file of all the tracks you've created, it's only providing you with the notes and some basic control change information. Studio One can import and read this information but nothing can be written inside the tracks themselves unless it can be written as simple automation (which is how S1 handles these events). For most Studio One users this won’t be an issue since all the information is stored within the Song file; however, if you do find you need this extra functionality, here’s what you do.
We Are Number One Midi File
The easiest way to work around this is to export your MIDI tracks by highlighting all the tracks of MIDI data that you have in a song (Figure 3),
right-clicking on them and selecting 'Export Parts to MIDI File' from the drop-down menu (Figure 4).
We Are One Midi File
This will create a Type-0 MIDI file. You can also just click “Save As” and, from the dropdown menu in the popup box, select MIDI file instead of Song file. It will carry over any CC’s in the file header, but may need some tweaking.
One Drop Midi File
Next, take that SMF and import it into another DAW like Logic, Cubase, Ableton Live, etc. This is where you can add any Program Changes and Control Changes necessary for your song. Pretty much any other DAW will allow you to insert this data anywhere within the MIDI tracks. Once that’s done, you can re-save and export your Standard MIDI File to whatever media you wish such as a usb stick, cloud, or floppy disk (Figure 5) and use it properly.
Studio One is still a very powerful DAW and you can do tons with it. Sometimes, however, we need to find little workarounds for whatever DAW we happen to be using.
